TESOL I: What is a Method?

Take a look at these presentations based on Richards and Rodgers (2014), Celce-Murcia (2001, 2014) and Kumaravadivelu’s (2003, 2006) ideas.

TESOL I: Additional Readings

Hello all,

For most of the topics on your syllabi, I will recommend additional readings that can be useful for preparing your presentations, studying for tests, writing your posts or getting ideas for your lesson plans.

They are not in the original TESOL I packet and they focus on research or the application of the theoretical background we analyze in class.

I hope you find them useful and give you ideas about what adapting a method implies. You can start by reading this 2012 overview by Waters:

Trends and issues in ELT methods and methodology

You can watch videos and find additional resources to understand methods and approaches in the English Teaching Forum page:  https://americanenglish.state.gov/search/solr/series%20method?f%5B0%5D=bundle%3Aresource

Finally, I recommend reading this article by Larsen-Freeman, Dornyei and Thurrell discussing (20 years ago) the inadequacy of methods and introducing the idea of postmethod, an idea foreign language teachers should be familiar with in the 21st century:  Direct Approaches in L2 Instruction- A Turning Point in Communicative Language Teaching?

Here is a short article written by Thornbury as a reaction to Larsen-Freeman and Dorneyi’s paper: Comments on Marianne Celce-Murcia, Zoltán Dörnyei, and Sarah Thurrell’s Direct Approaches in L2 Instruction- A Turning Point in Communicative Language Teaching?. A Reader Reacts

Check the blog constantly, as new articles are added frequently.

See you in class,

Ana C.

DOING A LOT WITH A LITTLE: PROFILING THE ALTERNATIVE LITERACY CLASSROOMS

ML2 - Second Language Literacies

By JOHANN E. PEREZ A

“We must prepare young people for living in a world of

powerful images, words and sounds.”

UNESCO, 1982

imagen 1Today’s world is inscribed in technological rationality, and this sort of new rationality is allowing other forms of thought, it is generating a new culture and new kinds of interpreting the reality about mankind, the nature, and generates new perceptions about economic, social and political issues. It is a matter of a new hope for human progress as a social effort but with a constant contrast with prefixed values and, in some cases, the worst horrors on human history. This kind of new rationality belongs to the economic and social policies of the globalized world in which we live in and which leads the commodification processes that rules our lives and societies.

Since people have more ways for learning about the world and communicating or expressing through…

Postmethod Article

Hello everybody,

Here is the missing article you need to read for your test. I told you at the beginning of the semester that the articles would be in the books I showed you at the resource center in case the copies were taken and not returned. This article was in Richards and Renandya’s book, or you could have googled the article to find the PDF version. You need to be more autonomous and invest some effort on your learning.

Anyway, here it is. Read it and answer the assigned questions.
